The Story.
Innovator(s)
Our employer is the City of Kansas City, specifically under the Civil Rights and Equal Opportunities Department. The job of our employer is to serve the community by ensuring discrimination doesn't occur within public places or in the workplace as well as making continuous efforts to assist minority, women, disadvantaged, and small businesses.
Problem
The problem we are trying to solve is civil rights violations with a focus on violations with law enforcement. The goal is to educate users on their rights while also creating a way to keep officers and citizens safe.
Solution
The solution is to create an app that will assist users (the community) with learning their civil rights both in the workplace and in the day to day life. The app will also have a special section that will specifically focus on law enforcement with features such as location sharing, automatic recording, and discrimination forums.
Target Market
Our target audience is focused on minorities and underserved communities.
Societal Impact
Our solution would allow citizens to have a better understanding of their rights so they can know when they have been violated. Our app would also would create a space for law enforcement and users to build community with each other.
Next Steps
The steps we would need to make our solution a reality is money as well as guidance from law enforcement officials and people within the community. It takes money to maintain the app but the important part is community and law enforcement involvement, in order to get users on both sides to make the app more efficient.
Reflection
By researching our problem and developing a solution we realized how intricate the topic of civil rights is. By coming to this consensus we were able to work on community outreach within our department and gather data in order to find possible solutions to the issue at hand.
Use of Backer Contributions
We are not currently accepting contributions from our voters. This pitch is part of the ProX competition for $5,000. With backer contributions, we would be able to secure a domain for our app and even get an app developer to help us navigate the technical side. If there is money left we would be able to work on implementing community outreach programs to acclimate users to the app as well as create spaces of education for both officers and citizens.
