The Story.
Innovator(s)
My employer was the Unified Government of Wyandotte County. The county government administers state laws through elected officials and oversees the local affairs of Kansas City, Bonner Springs, and Edwardsville. They additionally provide parks, libraries, sewers, public assistance, and emergency management through appointed boards and officials.
Problem
Financial barriers have made mental health treatment inaccessible to many young residents of Wyandotte County.
Solution
The Wyandotte County Youth Mental Health Project connects residents to education resource sheets, comprehensive mental health assessments, and mental health providers near them. In addition, a free Saturday morning support group for youth looking to engage in peer-led conversations.
Target Market
The target market is residents in Wyandotte County between the ages of 13 to 17 who struggle with depression and anxiety. In addition, we hope to connect with parents of youth struggling so they can remain involved in treatment.
Societal Impact
Currently, there are no support groups advertised for youth struggling with depression or anxiety. My project would fill this gap and positively impact the thousands of low-income residents who reported having poor mental health in last year's health assessment.
Next Steps
I've found a provider that is willing to rent out their building on Saturday mornings, meaning the next step is working with local food banks to get a steady supply of food for our provided breakfast; the projected date for the completion of the website and social media pages is the end of July.
Reflection
This work has opened my eyes to the networks of people that dedicate themselves every day to improving this community. They are indispensable to the people of Wyandotte County and have helped me develop the skills to become a better public servant.
Use of Backer Contributions
We are not currently accepting contributions from our voters. This pitch is part of the ProX competition for $5,000. Funding would primarily go towards providing free food to support group attendees, building rental, and website upkeep. They would also help us expand our project into more intensive health challenges like sexual assault recovery and substance abuse.
