The Story.

Innovator(s)

SWAGG INC. is a non-profit organization that helps returning citizens transition back into society and out of jail for good. We do this by providing employment opportunities, entrepreneurial development, youth mentorship, speaking opportunities, and workshops.

Problem

How might we use TCKC residents’ stories to reduce biases about returning citizens and to inspire the community to take action in the fight against mass incarceration in Kansas City?

Solution

Have guest speakers from SWAGG INC visit different schools to share their experiences. Their stories will educate the students on the adversities returning citizens face and how to prevent people from going to jail.

Target Market

Young people and Black men are most affected by the problem. Returning citizens are often released from prison without anything to fall back on.

Societal Impact

This will benefit families that are combatting the consequences of mass incarceration.

Next Steps

We will need to look at which districts will agree to a contract.

Reflection

It has made us better with other people and also has changed my view on incarcerated people. Incarceration does not define who you are.

Use of Backer Contributions

We are not currently accepting contributions from our voters. This pitch is part of the ProX competition for $5,000. We will use the money by giving out free books to the students and providing a workshop and speaking session to schools for free.
